This page explains the mechanisms behind our approach, the evidence behind the ingredients we use, and why we make the formulation choices we do.

The gut-brain axis is the constant, bidirectional communication between your digestive system and your brain, carried across several overlapping channels at once. Cleveland Clinic characterizes the connection as complex and bidirectional[2], naming the same three key players — the enteric nervous system, the vagus nerve, and the gut microbiome — and noting that health or disease in one system affects the other. Harvard Health puts the clinical consequence plainly[3]: digestive distress can be either the cause or the product of anxiety, stress, or depression, which is why treating one without accounting for the other so often fails.
One correction worth making, because it appears almost everywhere in this category: most of the body's serotonin is made in the gut, but it stays there. Gut serotonin doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier. What it does instead is activate vagal afferent fibers that signal the brainstem[4], which in turn modulate the serotonergic and noradrenergic systems involved in mood and stress. The gut talks to the brain up a nerve rather than shipping neurotransmitters into it — a distinction that changes what a supplement can honestly claim to do.

How Does a Stressed Gut Reach the Brain?
The clearest mechanism runs through inflammation: when the gut barrier is compromised, bacterial products and inflammatory signals enter circulation and affect the brain. The gut lining is meant to be selectively permeable — letting nutrients through while keeping bacteria and their byproducts contained, a job carried out largely by zonulin, the protein that regulates how tightly the barrier's tight junctions stay sealed. When that barrier is compromised, reviews of the gut-brain axis describe how it can allow bacterial products and inflammatory signals into circulation[5], producing the kind of chronic, low-grade inflammation that affects the brain.
This matters because that inflammation is increasingly tied to cognition. A Harvard Medical School immunologist describes the vagus nerve as a direct route[6] between the two organs, and points to research associating microbiome disturbances with anxiety, irritability, and low mood. Much of this work focuses on long-term cognitive health, and the everyday brain fog that sends people looking for answers is less directly studied — so we describe the same machinery (barrier integrity, inflammatory tone, immune signaling) as plausibly involved rather than proven.
A related caution belongs here. The popular term for a compromised barrier is "leaky gut," and increased intestinal permeability is real and measurable — but "leaky gut syndrome" is not a recognized medical diagnosis, and we don't treat it as one. Why Feed the Microbiome Instead of Adding Bacteria?
Because most of the gut's influence on the rest of the body is carried by the metabolites bacteria produce, not by the bacteria themselves — and feeding resident bacteria raises those metabolites more reliably than introducing new strains. The metabolites that matter most are short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, acetate, and propionate. These molecules are made when gut bacteria ferment dietary fiber, and they help nourish the gut lining, regulate inflammation, and influence immune cells and signaling that reach the brain[7]. Healthline's overview of the axis[8] describes the same chemistry, noting that gut microbes make SCFAs by digesting fiber and also produce neurotransmitters including GABA.
The practical question is how to raise those metabolites. Adding probiotic bacteria is one route, but it's unpredictable — strains vary, survival through stomach acid is inconsistent, and colonization is often temporary. Shuven takes the other route where fiber is appropriate to the formula: feeding the bacteria you already have with prebiotic fiber. Two honest qualifications. Second, the prebiotic doses used in clinical fiber studies are several grams, considerably higher than the supporting amount in a capsule-based formula. PHGG is there to support the SCFA-producing environment as part of a broader formula, not as a standalone high-dose fiber product. The mechanism — feeding resident bacteria rather than adding new ones — is the same regardless of dose, but the size of the effect is not, and we'd rather say that than imply a capsule replaces dietary fiber.
What Does Dose Transparency Actually Mean?
It means every active ingredient is listed with its exact amount per serving, with no proprietary blends — and that we publish the places where our amount sits below the research rather than hiding them. A supplement can list an impressive ingredient and still include too little of it to do anything. The industry even has a name for it: "label dressing" or "pixie dusting," where an active appears on the panel at a fraction of a studied amount, often buried inside a proprietary blend that hides the individual numbers entirely.
This is possible because of how the category is regulated. As the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements explains[11], medicines must be approved by the FDA before they can be sold, while supplements do not require that approval — companies are responsible for holding evidence that their products are safe and their claims truthful, but generally don't have to show it to the FDA before going to market. Third-party testing and published doses are how a brand voluntarily closes part of that gap.

What Is the Evidence Behind Our Ingredients?
Shuven formulas draw on three well-studied categories: adaptogens for the stress response, nootropics for cognition, and calming amino acids. Here's the honest state of the evidence for each, including where it's strong and where it's still developing.

L-Tyrosine, a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine, enhances cognition specifically under stress or heavy mental demand[17] rather than acting as an all-purpose booster. In candor, the strongest human trials for Lion's Mane and L-Tyrosine used larger doses than fit in a capsule stack, so we describe them as standardized, research-informed ingredients rather than claiming a one-to-one dose match.
Calming amino acids. L-Theanine (as Suntheanine at 200 mg, the amount used in the trial) produces calm, alert focus without sedation; EEG research shows it increases the alpha brain-wave activity tied to relaxed attention[18], and a four-week randomized trial[19] found it reduced stress-related symptoms and improved attention. How Does This Science Become a Formula?
